i have to pack a lunch for ellie and gray monday through thursday now that they go to "school." every thing i pack has to be something they can eat on their own and cannot have to be refrigerated and/or heated. in the past two weeks, i have a.) used 650 plastic baggies, and b.) turned to google for toddler lunch ideas more than once.
i've read of the
bento (japanese) style of packing lunches on numerous occasions and thought it oh-so-cute. also, oh-so-time-consuming.
but...it's sunday afternoon, and i felt inspired.
behold, my attempt at a
bento lunch without any legitimate bento lunch tools:
included:
- yellow cherry tomatoes
- purple grapes
- mini saltine crackers
- sliced colby jack string cheese
- peanut butter and banana rolled on a whole wheat tortilla
- fruit leather hearts
- quartered dill pickles
- tiny strawberry wafer cookies
(real bento lunch tools are made with compartments so your cute little food vignettes will not mix as soon as the box is moved. like, your kid gets to see the cute set up, which is the point. in other words, this box will be a jumbled mess as soon as it gets tipped upright and flung around by a certain 3-year-old. oh, well...maybe i can get a few
real bento boxes someday.)

I read your blog but don't generally comment (bad - I know).
We're military stationed overseas in Japan, and if you're interested in having some real bento supplies, I'd be happy to send some to you. They have a ton at the 100 yen stores (super duper dollar stores) in all sizes with all sorts of characters, plus all the extra fun supplies that are always shown in the bentos. I'd love if my daughter were interested in having a bento-style lunch for her to take to Kindergarten, but she just wants lunch like all the other kids have. : ( Maybe I'll force it on her a couple of days to see if she'll take to it.

What a great lunch! I love it! Making lunches is something I struggle with too, especially since I have one who is picky.
